2 Women Hospitalized After Early-Morning Scarborough House Fire

One victim revived after losing vital signs as investigators probe the cause of the blaze.

A two-alarm house fire in Scarborough sent two women to the hospital early Friday after flames tore through a home near Birchmount Road and Lawrence Avenue. Fire crews were called to the residence on Dulverton Road at around 1:30 a.m., arriving to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the property.

Toronto Fire officials say a woman was rescued from the basement unit without vital signs before being revived on scene by paramedics and rushed to a trauma centre, where she remains in critical condition. A second woman from the main-floor unit managed to escape the home but was also transported to the hospital with injuries described as serious but not life-threatening.

Firefighters described the blaze as difficult and “stubborn,” with crews working in heavy smoke conditions to perform the basement rescue and bring the fire under control. Officials confirmed the home was equipped with working smoke alarms, which they say likely helped alert occupants and may have prevented an even greater tragedy.

The cause and origin of the fire have not yet been determined, and the Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified and is expected to investigate. Authorities have not released the identities of the women as family members are notified, and no other injuries have been reported.
