A 14-year-old driver is in serious condition after an early morning police pursuit in Scarborough ended in a multi-vehicle crash now under investigation by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU).
Shortly before 1 a.m. on Sunday, Toronto police began pursuing a vehicle for speeding in the area of Lawrence Avenue East and Kingston Road. During the pursuit, the pursued vehicle collided with another vehicle at the intersection, resulting in a serious crash.
The 14-year-old behind the wheel of the first vehicle was taken to the hospital in serious condition. Three people in the second vehicle suffered non-serious injuries, according to information released so far.
Because the incident occurred during a police pursuit and resulted in serious injury, the SIU has invoked its mandate and taken over the investigation. The SIU is an independent provincial agency that probes police conduct in cases involving death, serious injury, allegations of sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
Investigators are expected to gather evidence from the scene, including vehicle data, witness statements, and any available video, before determining whether any officers may have committed an offence. No charges have been announced, and no further details about the teen driver, including identity, have been released at this time.
