Multiple Fire Incidents Keep Crews Busy Across Pickering, Scarborough and Whitby

Caravan Blaze Reported on Swainsea Lane

Firefighters tackled multiple fires across Pickering, Scarborough and Whitby on Monday, March 9, including a caravan blaze and several suspected arson incidents outdoors.

The first incident occurred in Pickering during the early afternoon. Emergency crews were called to Swainsea Lane at approximately 1:47 p.m. after reports of a caravan on fire in a roadside layby.

Firefighters arrived to find the caravan consumed by flames. Crews acted urgently to contain the dangerous blaze and launched aggressive suppression efforts using specialized firefighting equipment.

A thermal imaging camera was deployed to identify hidden hot spots within the structure, allowing firefighters to locate areas where the fire could continue to burn unnoticed. Teams also used a hose reel jet to apply water directly to the flames, while ceiling hooks were used to pull apart sections of the caravan to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

Firefighters remained at the scene until they were confident the blaze was fully under control.

Motorbike Fire on Oliver’s Mount

Later in the afternoon, crews from Scarborough were dispatched to another incident involving flames in an open area.

At around 5:44 p.m., firefighters received reports of a fire on Oliver’s Mount, a well-known location in the area. When crews arrived at the scene, they discovered a motorbike that had caught fire and was already burning intensely.

Firefighters used a knapsack sprayer to tackle the blaze, a portable piece of equipment often used for smaller fires or in areas where larger apparatus may be less practical.

The fire was extinguished without injuries reported. Authorities believe the motorbike fire may have been started deliberately, and the circumstances surrounding the incident are being examined.

Campfire Spreads to Bush in Ruswarp

A third incident later that evening required Whitby firefighters to respond to a report of flames in the open countryside.

At approximately 6:29 p.m., crews were called to Water Lane in Ruswarp after concerns were raised about a fire spreading outdoors. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that a campfire had spread to nearby vegetation.

The fire had reached a bush and covered an area about two metres by two metres.

Fire crews worked quickly to contain the flames before they could spread further. Three knapsack sprayers were used to douse the fire and cool the surrounding area.

Although the fire was successfully extinguished, authorities determined it had been deliberately set. Police were informed following the incident.

Authorities Urge Public Caution

While none of the incidents resulted in reported injuries, fire officials continue to urge the public to act responsibly around open flames and report suspicious activity.

Intentional fires can quickly get out of control, particularly in outdoor settings where vegetation and dry materials can fuel rapid spread. Emergency crews emphasize that even relatively small fires can pose a threat to nearby property and the environment.

Investigations into the incidents are ongoing. Authorities urge anyone with relevant information to promptly contact local police or fire services to assist with the inquiries.
