Collision Between VIA Train and Snowplow in Scarborough Causes Major Delays

Rail service was disrupted Thursday afternoon in Scarborough when a VIA Rail train hit a snowplow during snowstorm cleanup. The collision happened around 1:40 p.m. near Scarborough Golf Club Road and Kingston Road, leading to road closures and travel delays nearby.

Toronto police and emergency crews arrived quickly. Scarborough Golf Club Road was closed between Dale Avenue and Confederation Drive, and drivers were told to take other routes while the situation was handled. Thankfully, no one was hurt in the collision.

According to VIA Rail, the incident involved Train 644, which was traveling from Toronto to Ottawa with 205 passengers. The company confirmed that everyone on board was safe. Emergency services were called right away, and trains were stopped while crews cleared the tracks and removed the snowplow. The delay is approximately three to four hours. Additionally, several other routes—specifically trains 44, 63, 43, 65, and 66—are expected to face delays ranging from 30 minutes to over an hour. VIA Rail has stated that compensation will be provided in line with its standard policies for affected passengers.

By 5 p.m., Metrolinx said two tracks had been cleared, so trains could run in both directions again. However, officials warned that delays would continue as crews worked to get schedules back to normal, and some trips might still change or be cancelled.

Transit authorities have urged passengers to stay informed by regularly checking the GO Transit and VIA Rail websites for the latest updates. Commuters should also plan for extra travel time, as the snowstorm and cleanup work may still affect travel in Scarborough, even in severe weather. Snow removal operations are crucial for safe travel, but they can also create unexpected hazards when combined with active rail lines. In this case, the quick response of emergency personnel helped prevent injuries, while ongoing efforts aim to minimize disruption to commuters.

Passengers affected by the delays are asked to remain patient and check for updates from transit officials. Crews are working to clear the tracks and restore schedules to normal, but some delays may persist into the evening.
