Morocco’s World Cup campaign has already produced one of the tournament’s most talked-about breakout performances, with teenage midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi earning a place in Opta’s Team of the Opening Round.
The Lille prospect received the recognition after an assured display in Morocco’s 1-1 draw against Brazil on June 13. Making his first appearance at a World Cup, the 18-year-old showed composure and maturity rarely seen from a player of his age on such a prominent stage.
Facing a Brazilian side packed with international talent, Bouaddi played a central role in Morocco’s midfield. Rather than being overwhelmed by the occasion, he became one of the most involved players on the pitch.
The midfielder recorded 87 touches, a total exceeded only by Brazil’s two central defenders. His constant involvement enabled Morocco to maintain possession effectively and retain control during key phases of the match.

According to Opta’s data, he became the second-youngest player since 1966 to complete at least 50 passes in a World Cup match. He reached that mark at 18 years and 254 days old, underlining just how remarkable his contribution was against one of football’s traditional powerhouses.
For a player appearing in his first World Cup fixture, the achievement added another layer to an already memorable evening.
Bouaddi’s impact was not limited to ball retention. He also showed confidence in possession by carrying the ball forward and taking on opponents when opportunities arose.
The youngster attempted five dribbles during the match, ranking second among Morocco’s players. Only Azzedine Ounahi attempted more, with eight.
His willingness to drive forward gave Morocco another attacking outlet and demonstrated the versatility that has attracted attention from leading clubs across Europe.
Opta’s Opening Round XI featured several of the game’s biggest names, making Bouaddi’s inclusion even more notable.
He was selected in midfield alongside United States international Weston McKennie. The attacking positions were occupied by Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, and Côte d’Ivoire’s Yann Diomandé.
The defensive unit consisted of Antonee Robinson, Harry Souttar, Roberto Lopes, and Michael Murillo, while Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha earned the spot between the posts.
Bouaddi’s performance has further strengthened his reputation as one of Europe’s most promising young midfielders. Several reports have linked him with elite clubs, including Real Madrid, Arsenal, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain.
Praise has also come from within his own club environment. Veteran striker Olivier Giroud recently spoke positively about the teenager, pointing to his confidence and mature approach to the game.
As Morocco prepares for crucial group-stage encounters against Scotland and Haiti, Bouaddi will once again be under the spotlight. If his opening performance is any indication, the young midfielder could become one of the defining breakout players of the 2026 World Cup.
